Female orangutan at the National Zoo, Washington DC. She was indoors sitting on a ledge right next to the partition separating us. The glass was smudged and smeared on both sides. I was watching through my camera as she interacted with a few children in front of me trying to figure out an angle between the heads and the smudges. Then she looked straight at me. I was so startled at the power of that moment that I pressed the button more from adrenaline than conscious intent. This is barely cropped as I had a telephoto lens still on the camera from being outside.
